Saturday Meditation and Dharma Talk Feedback - Tracy
Writer : 국제선센터   2013-11-30 10:59:02

I had been a sincere Christian who denied any other religions for more than 10 years. I don't exactly remember how I got interested in Buddhism but for me it was like the taste of plant medicine that was found on the mountain trail with some fresh air. Going to Church every Sunday was like taking pills from the doctor without knowing what kinds of disease I had. Since I gave birth to babies I started to take juice from genseng which my father collected on mountains whenever I had a cold. Maybe it was about that time when I got the feeling that I must be one with the nature around me.
Last summer my family decided to have a temple stay instead of busy, crowded beaches. I actually expected to see the grand statue and beautiful scenery around the temple. However, the biggest impression I got from the stay was "my own footsteps". It was quite a shock for me that I could hear my footsteps very clearly while I was walking. In my busy life, walking was just a process for a destination and I never thought about 'walking' itself.
Later then, I noticed 'International Seon Center' while I was driving past the building. Even though I had been around 'Mokdong' for a long time, I hadn't got interested in that building before. I searched the Internet to find a Saturday Meditation Program and it was actually hard for me as a working mother of three kids to have a free time on Saturday evenings.
I was late on the first day and I got puzzled when I saw several people sitting against each other in silence. I sat beside them and a lot of wondering thoughts came in and out of my mind and when I finally calmed myself down, they started walking without any words as like they were haunted by some spirits. After the first weird day for me, I had a talk with Bhikkuni Chunjo Sunim and I learned how to do meditation. It was simple and sounded easy. When I see something, just see it as it is, and when I hear something, just hear it as it sounds. Actually that simple thing struck my head. All fears or worries come from thoughts that are exaggerated or disappointing from what we expected. We don't see things as they are.
The next week wasn't easy to be on time, either but I realized that I was different. I was like being trapped in thoughts and thoughts but as I have practiced seeing the thoughts as they are, thoughts appeared and disappeared without worries. It's still hard for me to explain what exactly meditation is but I feel that I've got to know myself as a being which is interacting with the universe surrounding me.
Everyone is saying living a life is for oneself or for one's family but they are suffering from the lives because they don't know exactly who they are and what the family means to them.
Still I'm learning and have a lot to learn but as an English teacher for my students, once I told my students to do 30-second meditation for their lives. One of them said the world looked different after that, and that added some energy to my meditation practice.
