Hold nothing dear / 그리운 것에 집착하지 말라

Hence hold nothing dear,

for separation from those that are dear is painful;

bonds do not exist for those to whom nothing is dear or not dear.

是以莫造愛愛憎惡所由已除縛結者無愛無所憎

그러므로 하나라도 그리운 것을 잡지 말지니,

그리운 것과 헤어짐은 괴롭기 때문이네.

어떤 것도 그리워하거나 미워하지 않는 사람에게는

아무런 속박이 없네. (211)

Avoid that which should be shunned / 피하여야 할 것을 피하라

Applying oneself to that which should be avoided,

not applying oneself to that which should be pursued,

and giving up that quest,

one who goes after pleasure envies those who exert themselves.

遠道則自順順道則自遠捨義取所好是爲順愛欲

피하여야 할 것에 전념하고

추구하여야 할 것에 전념하지 않으며

(진리) 탐구를 포기하고 쾌락을 뒤쫓는 사람은,

노력을 기울이는 사람들을 부러워하네. (209)

Associate with the Wise / 현명한 이들과 사귀어라

Therefore, with the intelligent, the wise,

the learned, the enduring, the dutiful and the noble

- with a man of such virtue and intellect should one associate,

as the moon (follows) the starry path.

是故事多聞幷及持戒者如是人中上如月在衆星

그러므로, 지성인, 현인(賢人), 학식자,

참을성 잇는 사람, 착실한 사람,

그 같은 덕성과 지성을 갖춘 성인들과 함께 해야 하리니.

마치 달(月)이 총총한 별들의 길을 따르듯. (208)
